Writing for the Web

Writing for the web is a skill by itself. Here are some general rules to help you get started.

  • Keep it short. 1-3 paragraphs per page.
  • Use lists and bullet points.
  • State your point at the start of each paragraph.
  • Write for your viewers, not for yourself.
  • When in doubt, hire a writer with Web experience.

Content is the copy (text and graphics) that provides the actual information on a web site. Usually this begins life with the client and then the web designer helps massage it for use on the web. This is a trick in itself but if the basic content is good to begin with the job gets easier.

This is where the message about your company or project lives. The most common mistake made by entrepreneurs is to write this content as though they were the audience. Remember that the viewer does not necessarily share your passion and interest just yet. Keep the text short and use lists and bullet points where appropriate.
